Red Deer Wine is the brand of Waitaria Estate, a 5 ha vineyard in Kenepuru Sound that is quite possibly the only commercial grapegrowing operation in the Marlborough Sounds. The owner is Chicago businessman Stan Simpson who purchased the Bayview Farms property in 2010. The vines were established in 2004 against advice that the remote location would be too wet and windy, but the resultant wines have been successful in wine shows, proving their quality. Originally released under the ‘Bayview’ brand, they have been rebranded as ‘Red Deer’ after the herd of red deer that is raised on the property. Willoughby and Laurie Roodt manage the farm and tend the vineyard, which is planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Viognier. The well-known David Clouston is the contract winemaker, involved since 2008 and viticulturist Bart Arnst is working towards organic certification for the vineyard.
